What is Isocarboxazid (Marplan)?
Marplan – also known by the generic name Isocarboxazid, is a non-selective, irreversible monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI). It is one of three classical MAOIs still available for clinical use in the United States. Marplan is used in the psychiatric treatment of depression and is also used to treat anxiety disorders; along with these maladies, Marplan has also been investigated for use in the treatment of dementia, Parkinson’s Disease, and other memory-related disorders. Marplan has also found efficacy in the treatment of panic and phobias.
The Cost of Marplan
Marplan is a relatively expensive drug, costing an uninsured American an average of $270-$280 a month, even with a Marplan Manufacturer coupon. This is why many Americans have found our patient assistance program so helpful – it offers even more savings than the coupon!
Marplan Side Effects
Drugs that are used to treat depression – be it SSRIs or MAOIs – come with a list of serious side effects that cannot be ignored. While these drugs do wonders for some patients, Marplan may cause an increase in the number of suicidal thoughts or ideations in a patient. It may also cause a worsening of anxiety or depression.
Short-term studies have indicated that Marplan may increase the risk of suicidal thinking and behavior in young adults, children, and adolescents. It is recommended that a person be closely monitored during the first month of starting a new medication or dosage change. There was a noticeable decrease in suicidal behavior and ideation in patients above the age of 24, with the side effects decreasing as the age of the patient increased. Close observation and communication should always be used with a person that is experiencing mental health issues.
Marplan Dosing
Marplan is dosed differently depending on the age, weight, gender, and mental health history of the patient. For depression – the condition for which it most commonly prescribed – Marplan is generally taken at 10mg (milligrams), twice daily. The usual maximum dosage is 60mg/day. Due to the risk of side effects, use in children and adolescents is not recommended.
Marplan Interactions
Marplan has widely been replaced by newer SSRIs due to the numerous drug and food interactions that MAOI drugs carry with them. Marplan interacts with any food containing tyramine include any food that has been cured, aged, fermented, or spoiled. This can include sourdough breads, some overripe fruits, on-tap beers, cured meats, pickled products, broad and fava beans, and strong/aged cheeses. Marplan also has a number of serious interactions with other drugs, so make sure to tell your doctor about any other prescription drugs you may be taking. Drug interactions can cause deadly side effects, such as serotonin syndrome.
