What is Isocarboxazid (Marplan)?

Marplan – also known by the generic name Isocarboxazid, is a non-selective, irreversible monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI). It is one of three classical MAOIs still available for clinical use in the United States. Marplan is used in the psychiatric treatment of depression and is also used to treat anxiety disorders; along with these maladies, Marplan has also been investigated for use in the treatment of dementia, Parkinson’s Disease, and other memory-related disorders. Marplan has also found efficacy in the treatment of panic and phobias.

Marplan Side Effects

Marplan Dosing

Marplan is dosed differently depending on the age, weight, gender, and mental health history of the patient. For depression – the condition for which it most commonly prescribed – Marplan is generally taken at 10mg (milligrams), twice daily. The usual maximum dosage is 60mg/day. Due to the risk of side effects, use in children and adolescents is not recommended.

Marplan Interactions

Marplan has widely been replaced by newer SSRIs due to the numerous drug and food interactions that MAOI drugs carry with them. Marplan interacts with any food containing tyramine include any food that has been cured, aged, fermented, or spoiled. This can include sourdough breads, some overripe fruits, on-tap beers, cured meats, pickled products, broad and fava beans, and strong/aged cheeses. Marplan also has a number of serious interactions with other drugs, so make sure to tell your doctor about any other prescription drugs you may be taking. Drug interactions can cause deadly side effects, such as serotonin syndrome.
